Elisabeth Hamlyn, Young Accessory Designer of the Year 2010
Education
From an early age I wanted to become an artist like my grandmother and I was fascinated by the bold and colourful paintings by artists such as Matisse, Van Gogh and Mark Rothko.
I studied Textile Design at Winchester School of Art and was awarded a First Class Degree. I specialised in knitwear because I am excited by the possibilities of manipulating the structure of the fabric to create sculptural shapes.
I went to achieve an MA in Fashion Knitwear with Distinction from Nottingham Trent University. My research focused on fabric engineering and partial knit on computerized Shima Seiki knitting technology.
Professional Experience
I have exhibited work Internationally and sold knitted textile designs to renowned labels including Yves St. Laurent, Calvin Klein and Armani Exchange. I have also worked for knitwear supplier to the high street and as a University lecturer.
I launched my designer knitwear and unisex accessories label in 2008 and currently work from my creative studio at Cockpit Arts in London.
Inspiration
I am inspired by sculptors such as Anish Kapoor, Naum Gabo and by Artistic Movements such as the Bauhaus, Celtic knotwork and Op Art. The angular structures of architecture and graphic patterns also influence my work.
Designers that I admire are Hussein Chalayan for his thoughtful, conceptual designs and the Japanese designers, Issey Miyake and Yohji Yamamoto as they experiment with unusual garment shaping and construction.
Philosophy
Innovation
I just can’t design by drawing on a piece of paper; I have to physically work with the materials and machines. I don’t feel you can really develop ideas without physically having an involvement in their creation. I sculpt and manipulate fabric directly on the mannequin whist taking photographs at each stage to develop one off innovative garments.
My accessories have a timeless unisex appeal and can add sophistication to any outfit.
Quality
I use the finest quality natural fibres including Cashmere, Italian Merino Wool and Lambswool. I also experiment with innovative yarns such as Lycra, Lurex and polyester in unusual combinations.
UK Manufacture
All my products are manufactured in London and Scotland, to ensure quality and preserve British heritage in craftsmanship. All pieces are meticulously finished and made with the highest care and skill.
“Elisabeth Hamlyn” products are unique and are also an investment in the best of British design, skills and manufacture.
